ACGME to be Sole Accreditor of Osteopaths by mid-2015

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) are going to become organizations under the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), which will be the accrediting organ for osteopathic physicians by July 2015. The goal, according to Dr. Thomas Nasca, CEO of the ACGME, is to streamline medical training for DOs and to “ensure that the evaluation and accountability for the competency of resident physicians are consistent across all programs.”

The ACGME currently evaluates 9,000 residency programs in 135 specialties and subspecialties at 700 training institutions.  These numbers are certain to increase after the reorganization.
